Jet Airways, a Mumbai based airlines started Indian commercial airline operations on 5th May 1993. Two years later in 1993 it started commercial operations. At that time, it operated with only 4 Boeing 737-300 aircrafts and that too on lease. In 1995, on 4 January got the status of scheduled airline with the enact of a law in 1994. Ten years later in 2004 Jet airways fly on its maiden international flight from Chennai to Columbia. The man, whose vision saw Jet Airways fly so high, is Naresh Goyal the founder and current chairman of the airlines. At the time, when he started out with the idea of Jet airways he was already the proud owner of Jet air limited which offered marketing and sales services to foreign airlines operating in India. Mr. Goyal launched a full service scheduled airline, which could offer competition to the then, monopoly market of Indian Airlines. Thus, in January of 1994, Jet Airways started its operation in India.
The year 2006 has been another land mark year for the airlines as it announced its takeover on Air Sahara. It bought Air Sahara for a cool five hundred million US dollar that too in cash. It turned out to be the biggest takeover in the history of Indian Aviation. It also established Jet airways as the largest airline operating in India. Though this deal saw a failure, the next year saw a success in the deal and Air Sahara was at last bought for 340 million US dollar. Jet airways relaunched Air Sahara as a JetLite and marketed it as a low cost carrier. Later on in the year of 2008, Jet airways to integrate JetLite into the mother body.
Over the years, the airline has seen some extraordinary success also some lows. In 2008, the airline went for an alliance with rival Kingfisher Airlines, which included an agreement, on the sharing of code for, international and domestic flight, same ground handling, joint management of fuel to cut down expenses, joint sharing of flier programs and joint crew utilization. On 2009, it launched a low cost brand of airline named as Jet Konnect. It was launched with the aim, to increase the passenger count for the mother body. Once this aim would be fulfilled the Jet Konnect existence will be ceased.
According to the PTI report of 2010, Jet airways along with JetLite occupied 26.9% of the market share, thus, became the undisputed leader of the aviation market in India. The company is enlisted in Bombay Stock Exchange though 80% of the stocks are controlled by the chairman, Mr. Naresh Goyal, himself. Over the last few years the company also felt the heats of recession and had to withdraw a few fights.
Jet Airways has its hub in Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and head office at Siroya Centre, both in Mumbai. Secondary hubs of the Airways are located in Indira Gandhi International Airport, Brussels Airport, Netaji Subhas International Airport and Chennai International Airport. It has a flight size of 100, and an addition thirty-two has been ordered. It airplanes serves around 76 destinations across nineteen countries. There are fifty two domestic destinations and around twenty four international destinations that this Airway serves.
